A Community Needs Analysis identifies and prioritises the needs of a community via a systematic and transparent process. It is used to inform the design and delivery of programs, policies and services aimed at addressing those needs. It often requires public involvement to meaningfully contribute to the outcome as it seeks to gather accurate information regarding the current needs of a community.
Every community is unique, with different needs and ways of approaching them. It is important to consult with the community in a variety of ways, even if you are confident that you already understand the situation and how best to approach it. Academic research should then be used to offer a clearer understanding of the needs presented, why they exist, the broader situation in which they occur and the actions required to provide meaningful lasting solutions.
A Community Needs Analysis is usually presented in a concisely written report and can be used by government, businesses, not-for-profits and community groups to:
- Inform program, project or policy design and implementation
- Identify the stakeholders involved
- Gain community support and buy in
- Justify and support funding/tender applications
Thriive has prepared Community Needs Assessments for government organisations, not-for-profits and industry bodies.
